Rapid Measurement of Moment of Inertia

English

Measurement of powertrain moment of inertia on a vehicle

The inertia properties of a vehicle powertrain such as center of gravity, mass and moment of inertia are the main factors to define a low frequency vibrational behavior of a vehicle such as vehicle vibration at idle and/or ride comfort.

In general, there are two legacy methods for measuring the moment of inertia of a powertrain unit which is taken out from the vehicle body, one is to sling the unit at two points and the other is to utilize moment inertia measuring table. However, in the case of the measurement of a powertrain on a completed vehicle, these methods require a lot of manpower, time and cost, because tedious powertrain mounting and dismounting operations from a vehicle are needed.

The company has made use of its expertise and know-how accumulated over the years and developed the original software to measure the inertia properties of a powertrain on a complete vehicle very quickly. Therefore, the method and the original software make it possible to measure the inertia properties of a powertrain attached many parts and components on a complete vehicle, which are not easy to obtain from its design specification.

This method is useful for inertia properties identification and the measured properties improve accuracy of the CAE simulation.

Inertia measurement of passenger vehicle body and parts

The original software the company developed are able to apply to not only engine but also its parts such as crankshaft, passenger vehicle body and truck cabin, which balances accuracy with robustness.
