Vehicle Engine Exhaust Manifold Thermal Deformation Analysis

Summary

A vehicle engine exhaust manifold is an auto part which has an enormous risk to generate cracks caused by thermal deformations.  Therefore, should heat resistant cycle strength is predicable by numerical analysis, crack resistant design could be achievable. The following case study shows that nonlinear thermal deformation analysis in time domain is conducted by putting temperature distribution on the surface of the exhaust manifold as its boundary condition which is measured from physical test.  Finally, crack initiation point is predicted by calculated plastic strain which leads to propose the innovative crack resistant structure of a vehicle engine exhaust manifold.

The example shows the simulation reproduces the actual thermal deformation of a vehicle engine exhaust manifold.
